Substax

Electro Soul (NZ)

“Avalanche music for freaks.”

Introducing New Zealand electronic music act  Substax; genre bending pioneers of electro soul and breakbeat. They produce music that bridges the divide between analogue and digital, utilising both acoustic instruments, vintage synthesisers as well as cutting edge software and technology. Think soul, folk and deep house in the same territory to Groove Armada, Zero 7, Chemical Brothers and Bent.

Based in Auckland, New Zealand, the act is the production trio of Nick Farrands, Jason Johnston and Claudia Gunn.

Farrands and Johnston formed Substax while living in London in 1996 and Gunn joined the band as vocalist in 2002 following their return to Auckland.

Numerous compilation releases, renowned music festival and club performances followed, boosted by strong support from alternative radio.

Substax released their debut album Electro Soul Plane in 2005 through Sugarlicks Recordings Aotearoa.  The album was an alternative radio success and remains critically acclaimed at an underground level.

Substax have a number of new tracks in development under a series title of Digital Epic. The first single is Give Love.
